Renewable electricity generation increased 9.8% in 2024, reaching 9,836 TWh and accounting for 31.7% of global power generation, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.
Production of electricity from renewable energy sources increased by 9.8%, which is the highest ever annual increase recorded, as compared to a 1.4% increase in the production of electricity from non-renewable energy sources, as documented in a study conducted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Electricity production from renewable energy sources stood at 9,836 terawatt-hours (TWh), making up 31.7% of total global electricity production. This growth was more than in 2023.
Asia produced the highest amount of electricity from renewables, standing at 4,589 TWh, which was an increase of 14.3% when compared to the previous year. Production from solar and wind power contributed mostly to this increase.
Europe produced 1,758 TWh, an increase of 7.2%, driven by the increase in electricity production from solar and hydro resources. North America produced 1,535 TWh, up 5.8%, whereas South America generated 1,047 TWh, up 2.9%.
Electricity production from renewables also increased in the Middle East, Eurasia, Africa, Oceania, and the Central America and Caribbean region. The fastest increase regionally was experienced in the Middle East with an increase of 17.6%.
According to Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, more reliance on electricity is expected to happen, and the expansion of renewable power production will be key in decreasing the dependency on fossil fuels within buildings, transport, and industries.
Also, Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UNFCCC, noted that the figures revealed that there was continuous growth in renewable electricity production; however, increased financial resources would be required in order to assist the development of clean energy in developing nations.
Furthermore, IRENA reported that global renewable energy capacity installations had reached a record 693 gigawatts (GW) in 2025. The total renewable capacity installations amounted to 5.2 TW at the end of the year, and this accounted for 49.5% of the global electricity production capacity.
IRENA further noted that more installations of renewable energy capacity would be required owing to the increasing demand for electricity and the efforts towards energy transition and climate change mitigation.
