Electric vehicle sales in Europe rose sharply in March 2026 as higher petrol and diesel prices pushed consumers towards EVs, according to industry data.
The total sale of electric vehicles in Europe grew in March 2026 due to the rising diesel and petrol prices, encouraging people to go for electric automobiles.
The sale of passenger and light-duty electric cars in Europe jumped by 33% as opposed to a 19% increase in the months of January and February.
High fuel prices, along with instability in the global oil market, contributed to the increase in electric vehicle sales in March 2026. Disruptions to shipping routes around the Strait of Hormuz affected global oil supplies, leading to higher fuel prices across several European countries.
The data from Eurostat showed the price of fuel and lubricants increased by 12.9% in March compared to the corresponding month of last year in the EU. The increase in diesel prices was 19.8% while that of petrol was 9.4%.
The sale of Chinese-made EVs grew faster, as the sale of Chinese EVs grew 78% compared to 39% in the previous two months in the European region. The Chinese EVs comprised almost 24% of all the sold electric cars in Europe.
Data released independently by New Automotive and E-Mobility Europe indicated an overall increase of more than 50% in the number of electric vehicle registrations within 15 European Union/European Free Trade Association member states in March. Battery electric vehicle registration growth was recorded at more than 40% in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Poland.
The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) indicated that fluctuations within energy markets had raised attention toward decreasing reliance on non-renewable energy sources in the transportation industry. ACEA called for policy measures to promote zero-emission transport and alternative vehicle systems.
Industry experts and research organisations stated that the increase in fuel prices emphasised the different operating expenses between electric cars and traditional automobiles, especially in nations experiencing substantial increases in petroleum and diesel costs.
Vehicle marketplace platforms online in Europe noted the uptick in inquiries for electric vehicles in the reporting period.
However, it remains unclear whether the rise in electric car sales represents a shift in consumer behaviour or a temporary response to rising fuel prices.
