SC Calls For Strict Compliance On Waste Segregation Under 2016 Rules
The court pointed out that ongoing smart city projects cannot achieve their goals without proper waste management

If waste segregation is managed at the source, half the battle is already won. The Supreme Court on Monday said that segregation plays an important role, and if managed at the source, it will be vital for the environment. The court also asked states to provide details on compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The court pointed out that ongoing smart city projects cannot achieve their goals without proper waste management. According to it, sending mixed waste to waste-to-energy plants would only aggravate pollution. Also, it condemned the dismal waste segregation figures in the NCR, according to senior advocate Aparajita Singh, amicus curiae in the pollution case.
The court also directed affidavits from the NCR states by March concerning the compliance status of urban local bodies with the 2016 Rules, as well as that for a complete waste management plan encompassing models, implementing agencies, and timelines.
The Central Pollution Control Board has been asked to submit a report on the environmental impact of waste-to-energy projects. Earlier, the court criticized the Delhi government and the municipal authorities for inadequately handling 3000 tonnes a day of solid waste left untreated and warned of drastic measures, including perhaps halting construction activity, if the situation were not improved.
