Thane, Maharashtra, March 18, 2025: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has suspended waste dumping in the city temporarily after there were numerous incidents of fire at dumping sites. Trucks carrying garbage have been left stranded after the suspension with garbage piling up in residential and commercial enclaves. The progress has set off a political storm with the Congress blaming the Shiv Sena-BJP government for the crisis. The Congress claims that the Shiv Sena-BJP government is responsible for the crisis.

Thane, which has an approximate population of 25 lakh, generates over 900 metric tonnes of trash daily. The trash is collected first at the transfer station in Wagle Estate and then transported for dumping. However, with the recent fires at dumping sites and protests by local residents, activities at the CP Talao transfer yard have been halted, leading to disruptions in waste collection across the city.
