Volkswagen Doubles BEV Deliveries, Expands Market Share
Volkswagen doubles BEV deliveries in Europe, expanding market share and boosting global sales in Q1 2025.
In a clear bet on vehicle electrification, Volkswagen Group has become a powerhouse in the worldwide electric vehicle (EV) market, with its Q1 2025 performance highlighting both leadership in the market and consumer momentum. The German brand registered a spectacular 113% rise in Western European deliveries of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) over Q1 2024, markedly increasing its regional market share to 26%. BEVs thus now represent 19% of the company's overall deliveries in Western Europe, a significant jump from last year and a strong indication of rising EV uptake throughout the region.
This surge in European BEV performance was mirrored globally. The company delivered 216,800 all-electric vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 59% increase from the 136,400 units sold during the same period in 2024. With this, BEVs now represent 10% of the company’s global vehicle deliveries—up from just 6% a year ago. The gains were particularly robust in the United States, where BEV deliveries rose by 51%. Conversely, China—a historically robust EV market—experienced a sharp drop of 37%, indicating regional demand and competition shifts.
All in all, Volkswagen Group's combined vehicle deliveries amounted to 2.13 million units worldwide in Q1 2025, a restrained rise of just 1.4% over the 2.10 million units supplied in Q1 2024. Although China saw its overall vehicle sales decline by 7%, this was compensated by rising sales in other major markets: North America saw a 4% increase, South America a 17% spike, Western Europe rose by 3%, and Central & Eastern Europe an 8% rise.
The firm credited most of its success in the EV market to robust consumer demand for its new model range. New launches like the VW ID.7 Tourer, CUPRA Terramar, Skoda Elroq, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Porsche 911 have propelled BEV interest considerably, leading to a 64% rise in BEV-specific orders in Western Europe alone. Mirroring this increased demand, the region also registered a 29% increase in orders received from all types of vehicles, and Volkswagen's total European order book approaching one million vehicles.
We have good momentum in our home market overall, which is also evident in the 29 percent increase in incoming orders for all drive types," said a Volkswagen spokesperson. "Our products are being well received and demonstrate that the Volkswagen Group is on the right path.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also helped drive the Group's strong Q1 results. PHEV deliveries increased 15% year-on-year to 82,500 units. Growth was driven by new second-generation PHEVs with longer all-electric driving ranges of up to 143 kilometers, providing an attractive alternative for customers who are not yet ready to move to fully electric vehicles.
Volkswagen's strong performance in Europe and the Americas puts it well-placed in the current global race to electrify. The firm continues to advance on its aggressive EV blueprint, backed by a fast-growing portfolio of electric and hybrid vehicles. Alongside its commercial progress, Volkswagen is also advancing on its sustainability strategy, having just launched a new Green Finance Framework to tie its investments to environmental objectives.
As the first quarter comes to a close, the performance of the automaker indicates solid tailwinds for the coming months. With several new models launched and orders on the horizon breaking records, Volkswagen is well placed to maintain its momentum in BEV and PHEV segments. The company's ambitious electrification plan, coupled with increased consumer confidence and continued innovation, is establishing a new standard for the global automobile industry.
Volkswagen Group's increasing dominance in the marketplace—particularly in Europe—is a reflection not only of a shift in its product mix, but of a broader change in the auto industry. With electrification at the core of its long-term plan, Volkswagen is visibly setting itself up as a pacesetter in the green mobility revolution.
