AI to Drive Digitalization at HMEL Refinery

Mumbai, February 12, 2025: To speed up the digital transformation of India's refining industry, AVEVA, a world leader in industrial software, and HPCL Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL), a significant Indian refining and petrochemical corporation, have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership supports India's objective of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070 and is in line with the country's Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives.

The implementation of digital technology is essential for improving operational efficiency and sustainability, as India's refining capacity is expected to increase from 250 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to 450 MMTPA by 2030. To improve refinery operations, AVEVA will offer its range of industrial software solutions, which includes digital twins, cloud-based platforms, AI-driven analytics, and predictive maintenance tools.

One of the most sophisticated integrated refinery-petrochemical complexes in India is the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery, which is run by HMEL near Bathinda, Punjab. In addition to polyethylene and polypropylene facilities, the facility has a multi-feed cracker and an 11.3 MMTPA crude oil refinery. The MoU intends to improve supply chain management, process optimisation, and real-time operational information by utilising AVEVA's digital technologies.

Both businesses want to create a Centre of Excellence and a next-generation Refinery Command Centre as part of this partnership in order to raise the bar for digital transformation in the refining sector. The project will support India's energy security while enhancing resource use, energy efficiency, and sustainability in general.

Senior representatives from AVEVA and HMEL signed the Memorandum of Understanding, reiterating their dedication to promoting innovation in the petrochemical and refining industries. The cooperation intends to develop a roadmap for intelligent refining operations that complement India's long-term energy and environmental objectives by incorporating AI-powered digital solutions.
