Bihar has secured approval to purchase 300 MW of renewable power, strengthening its clean energy portfolio and supporting long-term sustainable electricity supply.

Bihar Receives Regulatory Approval to Procure 300 MW Green Power, Strengthening Renewable Energy Push

Bihar has received approval from the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) to procure 300 MW of renewable energy, marking another major step in the state’s efforts to expand clean power adoption and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources. The move is expected to support Bihar’s growing electricity demand while helping the state align with India’s broader renewable energy transition goals.

This approval has been made for Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), which will be buying power from these renewable energy sources on a long-term basis. This procurement process has been undertaken to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources in the power generation mix of Bihar.

Under the approved plan, Bihar is going to obtain 300 MW of wind-solar power from Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). It is estimated that this project is going to be implemented on a long-term basis so that Bihar can ensure its renewable power needs in the coming years.

Renewable Power Purchase takes place amid a scenario where there has been increased consumption of electricity in Bihar as a result of growth in industry and urbanisation, as well as household use. This is aimed at ensuring diversity of power sources, as well as minimizing dependency on electricity from non-renewable sources.

A key feature of the approved renewable energy arrangement is the integration of energy storage technology. The project includes a 300 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which is designed to improve power availability during peak demand periods and support grid stability by managing fluctuations associated with renewable energy generation.

The project is part of Bihar’s overall renewable energy policy. There have been efforts by the state government to invest in the solar, wind and battery storage projects among other renewable energy innovations. Moreover, there have been initiatives that were taken by the Bihar government to promote the development of renewable energy projects and pumped storage projects.

Renewable energy adoption is likely to bring various advantages, such as reduced emissions, enhanced supply stability and active involvement in India’s clean energy campaign. With the growth of renewable generating capacities in various states, energy procurement contracts like the one of 300 MW from Bihar are increasingly becoming a crucial means of securing future green energy supply.

This marks Bihar becoming another addition to this increasingly long list of states that are improving their renewable energy procurement efforts as India aims to achieve its goal of installing non-fossil fuel energy sources.
