China's new solar installations fell 66% in the first half of 2026 as last year's policy-driven installation rush faded, marking a return to more stable growth in the world's largest solar market.
China, the world's largest solar energy market, witnessed a sharp slowdown in new solar installations during the first half of 2026 as the impact of last year's policy-driven installation surge faded. The decline reflects a shift towards a more market-based renewable energy sector after developers rushed to complete projects before new electricity pricing rules came into effect.
According to data from the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA), the country has added 72.07 gigawatts (GW) of new solar capacity from January to June 2026, which is down by 66% from 212.21 GW of capacity added in the corresponding months of the previous year. The capacity added in June 2026 alone has fallen by 13.1%.
The deceleration is due to an unusual construction rush during the first quarter of 2025, in order to avail themselves of the last fixed electricity pricing scheme provided by China, before the latter nation adopted market pricing for its new solar and wind projects starting June 1, 2025.
While the decline appears significant, industry insiders point out that it may not necessarily mean a lack of support for renewables in any way. It only means that the market is back to its usual rates of installations since there has been a remarkable boom due to the special policies. The Chinese solar industry will still have favourable conditions for growth because of its excellent manufacturing capabilities.
A slower rate of installations will also assist in alleviating some strain on the country’s electricity grid. The fast development of solar energy in recent years has resulted in difficulties when it comes to incorporating renewable energy into the grid in certain areas where there has been no increase in electricity demands compared to the increase in generating capacity.
From a sustainability perspective, China is still vital in the clean energy revolution taking place around the world. China is the biggest producer of solar panels on the planet and has been a major player in bringing down the costs of solar technology in the world. Even with the lower installation rate this year, China is forecast to stay the biggest market of solar energy.
According to the forecast by the China Photovoltaic Industry Association, China will be installing 180 to 240 GW of solar energy in 2026, which is less than 315 GW of solar energy installed in 2025. This will become the first time in 2019 that China installs less solar energy on an annual basis.
