Climeworks Signs 450,000 Tons Carbon Removal Agreements in 2026

Climeworks Solutions, the carbon removal solutions provider based in Zurich, has announced that during the first half of 2026, it has signed 14 new agreements for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). The deals provide a total of 450,000 tons of carbon removal, from various technologies such as carbon removal, direct air capture (DAC), climate technology, carbon dioxide removal (CDR), and sustainable solutions.

Climeworks was founded in 2009 by Christoph Gebald and Jan Wurzbacher. This company has two direct air capture plants and is dedicated to capturing CO2 from the atmosphere for long term storage.

There are numerous industries benefiting from new Agreements.

The new deals include companies from banking, aviation, healthcare, luxury, retail and technology, among others, the company said. Climeworks are in partnership with AI infrastructure provider NTT DATA, financial services company Toronto-Dominion Bank and Tapestry, the Canadian consumer goods and retail company, as their first North American retail and consumer goods partner.

The agreements encompass several approaches to carbon removal, such as biochar, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), enhanced rock weathering (ERW), afforestation, reforestation and revegetation (ARR), and direct air capture technology.

The deals are based on "a diversified portfolio approach" which integrates various carbon removal pathways, said Climeworks. The company's Climeworks Solutions service was launched in 2024 and offers tailored carbon removal portfolios for businesses that comprise nature-based and engineered solutions.

The service had been launched in response to the growing demand from companies looking to complement their emissions reduction efforts by sourcing carbon removal solutions. The service was launched because companies were starting to look for carbon removal solutions when they were not able to cut their emissions through operational measures alone. Businesses can choose from various removal methods according to availability, scalability, and longterm storage capabilities through the portfolio model.

Growing Corporate Demand for Carbon Removal

The companies signing the new deals each bring in over $5 billion in revenue per year, Climeworks says. The deals reflect growing interest from big businesses in carbon removal solutions in various industries and regions, the company said.

The carbon removal market has been attracting increased interest, as companies seek ways to lower their carbon footprint and achieve net-zero goals. Other technologies like DAC, biochar and BECCS are being developed in addition to NbS solutions to improve the carbon storage potential.
