Delhi has intensified its crackdown on electricity theft in high-loss areas, targeting illegal connections and unauthorised power usage to reduce distribution losses and improve supply reliability.

Delhi Intensifies Crackdown on Power Theft in High-Loss Areas, Targets Illegal Connections

The Delhi government has launched a major enforcement drive against electricity theft in high-loss pockets across the national capital, directing power distribution companies (discoms) and enforcement agencies to take strict action against illegal connections, meter tampering and unauthorised electricity usage. The move aims to reduce distribution losses, improve financial efficiency of power companies and ensure a reliable electricity supply for genuine consumers.

Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood has directed officials to find out the areas which have AT&C loss rates higher than normal and take up stringent surveillance and inspection in such areas. The drive is aimed at catching those involved in illegal tapping of power, commercial usage and any additional strain on the power distribution system.

Officials said that power theft not only causes revenue losses for discoms but also affects the quality and reliability of electricity supply by increasing the load on transformers and feeders. Illegal connections can lead to overloading, frequent breakdowns and safety risks for residents as well as field workers.

Major Action in West Delhi’s Kamruddin Nagar

In the process, there have been major success stories reported from the area of Kamruddin Nagar in western Delhi, where taking action against illegal connections has prevented the theft of over 10 million units of electricity. Authorities have calculated the loss to be avoided annually due to the measure at about ₹24.4 crore.

Following the enforcement measures, electricity theft in the area declined by nearly 34,000 units per day, improving the efficiency of the local distribution network. The area had earlier recorded very high-power losses, creating challenges for maintaining stable electricity supply.

Technology-Based Monitoring to Identify Theft

Technology-driven measures for spotting unusual consumer trends and avoiding losses have become popular among both the government and discoms. They include feeder-level surveillance, energy auditing, data analysis, automatic meter reading, and digital monitoring tools, which allow for the identification of abnormal consumption trends.

They added that mapping of areas that have high loss levels is done through consumption trends and network reports, followed by spot checks for any illegal connections.

Delhi’s Long Fight Against Power Losses

Over the last twenty years, Delhi has succeeded in lowering its power transmission losses considerably. AT&C losses, consisting of technical losses in the distribution of electricity and commercial losses, including power theft and non-payment of bills, have declined from more than 50% to about 6%.

The improvement came after power sector reforms, private participation in distribution, network upgrades, better metering systems and stronger enforcement mechanisms. However, certain pockets continue to experience high losses due to illegal connections and unauthorised consumption.

Focus on High-Risk Pockets

However, the authorities are concentrating on the places where stealing electricity continues to be a problem. It was found earlier through some reports that some areas of Delhi had much higher AT&C loss than the city average because of stealing electricity, tampering meters, and illegal usage of electricity.

The representatives of Discom have also stressed that there is stealing of electricity through illegal charging points and unauthorized activities in some areas of the city.

The latest crackdown is part of Delhi’s broader strategy to strengthen the electricity distribution system, reduce commercial losses and improve the reliability of power supply. Officials said similar enforcement drives will continue across other high-loss areas of the capital.
