The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 were in force across the country until now. This year, the government has notified the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, replacing the earlier framework.
Delhi will bring in a new system of waste management from April 1, 2026, along with the enforcement of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will start collecting wet waste four days a week, namely Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, and dry waste three days a week, namely Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
This planned schedule is expected to bring improvements in the segregation of waste at the source and minimize the amount of mixed waste sent to the landfills. According to officials, the segregation of waste at the domestic level will increase the efficiency of recycling and ease the burden on the already overflowing dumping grounds of Delhi.
The new Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, have been notified by the Government of India. These rules will replace the existing rules of 2016. Although the previous rules asked for segregation of wet and dry waste, the new rules will also ask for the segregation of sanitary waste like sanitary napkins and diapers, and other special care wastes.
As per an MCD official, “The new rules are being analysed to see how they will be implemented here. To ensure that the rules are strictly implemented, a nodal officer will be appointed in each ward to keep a check on the implementation of the waste management system.”
The new system is expected to enhance waste management, recycling, and proper disposal of waste. Nevertheless, the success of the new system will depend to a large extent on the level of public involvement.
