Delhi will install its first solar tree at the Secretariat under a pilot project to test compact renewable energy generation, battery storage and public utility integration in space-constrained urban areas.

The Delhi government will install the capital's first solar tree at the Delhi Secretariat under a pilot project to examine how vertical solar infrastructure performs in space-constrained urban areas, according to Saur Energy. The project will assess power generation, battery storage and the use of locally generated electricity for public infrastructure before any decision is taken on wider deployment.

The pilot is being implemented by the power department in coordination with civic agencies. The Delhi Secretariat has been chosen as the first site because it houses the offices of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, cabinet ministers and senior officials. Officials will use the installation to evaluate operational performance and maintenance requirements in a government facility.

Subject to the outcome of the pilot, similar solar trees could be installed at traffic intersections, public plazas and commercial districts across Delhi.

A solar tree differs from conventional rooftop and ground-mounted solar systems by using a vertical steel structure fitted with branch-like arms that hold photovoltaic panels. The design accommodates multiple panels within a small footprint, making it suitable for cities where land is limited.

Authorities are also considering solar trees equipped with automated sun-tracking systems. These mechanisms allow panels to change their position during the day to maintain exposure to sunlight and improve electricity generation.

Power generated by the installation will be stored in a battery energy storage system integrated into the base of the structure. Under the proposal, the stored electricity will supply nearby public infrastructure, including street lighting, electric vehicle charging stations and other civic facilities. The system is intended to reduce dependence on the conventional electricity grid for these services.

The structure will also include a seating area at its base, providing a shaded space for pedestrians. The addition combines a public amenity with renewable energy infrastructure without requiring extra land.

The pilot forms part of Delhi's wider efforts to increase the use of renewable energy in built-up areas. Data collected from the project will be used to assess electricity generation, maintenance needs, battery performance and the practicality of installing similar systems at other public locations across the city.
