EKI Energy Services has received a 25-year Category-IV inter-state electricity trading licence from CERC, allowing the company to participate in electricity trading across India.
EKI Energy Services Ltd. has obtained an Inter-State Electricity Trading License (Category-IV) from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) that permits the company to undertake inter-state electricity trading in India for the next 25 years.
This license is being issued based on the provisions of the Electricity Act, 2003, and the CERC Trading License Regulations, 2020. This will permit the company to trade in electricity among the states through India’s energy markets.
The license has been obtained after a thorough assessment by the regulatory body of the financial stability, liquidity, operational readiness, and expertise of the company. There were no objections recorded against the application.
This license is indicative of the company entering into the Indian electricity trading business. Currently, EKI Energy Services Ltd. is engaged in providing services in carbon credit markets and related sectors like sustainability, ESG, and net-zero goals.
Through electricity trading, licensed organizations can buy and sell electricity to and from generators and distributors, respectively, using recognized market means.
The launch comes as the Indian power industry has been experiencing growth in terms of renewable energy production and electricity trade on the market. Firms operating in sustainability services and renewable energy are growing their operations in the energy industry space.
The firm was established in the year 2008 and has its headquarters in Indore. It provides services in carbon credit development and climate advisory, among others. It is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
According to EKI, the electricity trading segment would serve to strengthen its operations in renewable energy instruments, sustainability advice, and carbon market services.
The electricity trading industry in India falls under the jurisdiction of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). It has licensed traders, power exchanges, generation firms, and distribution companies.
According to EKI, the license is good for 25 years and allows the firm to carry out the interstate electricity trading business operations.
The firm currently offers carbon asset management, carbon credits production and sale, climate finance, and sustainability consultancy to firms operating in India and elsewhere. It operates within more than 40 countries via its climate business operations.
