Germany Advances Nuclear Fusion Power Plant Plans

A German company is pushing to build the world’s first operational nuclear fusion power plant, aiming to deliver clean, abundant energy to address global energy demands and climate goals.

Nuclear fusion, the process that powers stars, involves fusing atomic nuclei to release energy, producing minimal radioactive waste and no greenhouse gases, unlike fossil fuels or nuclear fission. A German firm is developing a fusion reactor using magnetic confinement in a tokamak design, targeting operational status within decades. The process requires heating plasma to temperatures exceeding 100 million°C, which is contained by powerful magnetic fields.

The primary challenge is achieving net energy gain, where the reactor produces more energy than it consumes.
