Himachal Pradesh is encouraging green hydrogen research at universities as the state expands its clean energy and low-carbon development initiatives.
Himachal Pradesh is seeking to strengthen its role in India's clean energy transition by encouraging greater research and innovation in the green hydrogen sector.
Chief Minister, Sukhinder Singh Sukhu, recently urged Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) to conduct research on green hydrogen and called it a significant part of the future energy policy of Himachal Pradesh. This request is made in the backdrop of Himachal Pradesh’s increasing emphasis on renewable energy sources.
Green Hydrogen Gains Importance
There is growing awareness regarding the potential of green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy sources, in tackling carbon emissions in those industries that cannot be easily de-carbonized. These include industries like heavy industries, transport and manufacturing. With countries seeking to move away from fossil fuels, investments in hydrogen production, storage, and distribution are gaining traction.
According to the Chief Minister, the first green hydrogen plant in Himachal Pradesh will be set up at Nalagarh in the district of Solan. The Chief Minister emphasized that educational institutions can make their contribution through innovation and skill development.
Role of Universities in Clean Energy Innovation
According to experts, universities could make an important contribution to developing green hydrogen technology through research on how to produce, store, increase efficiency, and use hydrogen in industries. Research establishments could also contribute to creating the workforce needed for the hydrogen economy.
In India, there is an increasing trend among governmental bodies and educational institutions to support the development of research centres and innovative projects related to green hydrogen.
Himachal's Green Energy Ambitions
The state’s focus on green hydrogen production is consistent with the state's general aim to encourage initiatives that promote green and clean energy. The state government has also highlighted the importance of balancing economic development with environmental sustainability.
With the increased recognition of green hydrogen in India's plans for energy transition, cooperation between governments, industries, and research institutions can be expected to play an important role.
