Hindustan Zinc Expands Renewable Energy Partnership with Serentica to 530 MW
Hindustan Zinc expands its renewable energy partnership with Serentica Renewables to 530 MW, securing over 70% of its power needs from green energy sources. The project, set to be fully operational by 2027, will support the company’s net-zero emissions goal and contribute to sustainable manufacturing in the mining sector.

Hindustan Zinc Ltd. has deepened its commitment to renewable energy by increasing its partnership with Serentica Renewables by increasing its round-the-clock renewable power supply from 450 megawatts (MW) to 530 MW. This move will allow the company to obtain more than 70% of its overall energy needs from renewables, achieving a major milestone in its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero by 2050 or earlier.
Enhancing Renewable Energy Capacity:-
As a part of the extended agreement, Serentica Renewables will offer at least 315 MW of constant renewable energy in each 15-minute segment. It would be achieved using a combination of solar, wind, and energy storage technology in order to achieve a smooth and stable supply of power. The project is developed on a captive power model and is expected to come onstream by 2027, with installations spread over high-resource locations in India.
The upscaling complements Hindustan Zinc's earlier transaction for 450 MW of green energy, upholding its focus on green power solutions. The increased capacity will reduce the company's reliance on fossil fuels significantly, lowering its greenhouse gas emissions and keeping production on the growth trajectory.
Driving Sustainability in Manufacturing:-
The agreement is consistent with Hindustan Zinc's long-term sustainability aspirations. The company is steadily moving towards achieving its vision of being net-zero, having already reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity by 14% against its base year of 2020. Through planning to be powered by over 70% by renewable sources by 2027, Hindustan Zinc is working to minimize its carbon footprint while enhancing its operational effectiveness.
Hindustan Zinc is also focusing on low-carbon production technologies. The company recently started getting renewable power from Serentica's 180 MW solar park, which was used in the manufacturing of Asia's first low-carbon "green" zinc, branded as EcoZen. The project reflects the company's commitment to sustainable production and reducing emissions in the metals and mining sector.
Industry Recognition and Future Plans:-
Hindustan Zinc's efforts towards sustainability have been internationally recognized. The organization has been newly added to the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2025, ranking among the world's top 1% most sustainable manufacturers. This is the second consecutive year the organization has received such recognition, cementing its standing as an industry leader in sustainable practices.
Part of Hindustan Zinc's long-term sustainability strategy involves investing more in clean energy technology and enhancing energy efficiency programs. Its deepening of the renewable energy partnership with Serentica is one of the milestones in this direction, allowing the company to decarbonize operational emissions while maintaining business growth.
Renewable Energy as a Key Strategy:-
Renewable energy is the core of Hindustan Zinc's climate action plan. The company makes a proactive move towards using sustainable energy solutions by focusing on solar, wind, and hybrid power plans. By doing so, it ensures itself of energy security as well as reduces its dependence on non-renewable power sources.
The expansion of its renewable power supply to 530 MW is bound to decrease carbon emissions significantly, complementing India's broader sustainability agenda. As industries are increasingly under pressure to reduce their footprint, Hindustan Zinc's dedication to clean energy technologies is an example that other metals and mining businesses can emulate.
Conclusion:-
Hindustan Zinc's decision to hike its renewable energy partnership with Serentica Renewables is a major step towards sustainable industrial operations. With more than 70% of its power needs being fulfilled from renewable sources, the company is working diligently to bring down carbon emissions and ensure green energy usage is commonplace.
As the project is to be in full operation by 2027, Hindustan Zinc is becoming a clean mining and metals production pioneer. As the company expands its clean energy initiatives, it strengthens its commitment to net-zero emissions, environmental responsibility, and enduring energy resilience.
