IATA and 123Carbon Join Forces to Combat Double Issuance of Carbon Credits

Ensure different systems will be operating correctly, as this is crucial in achieving confidence in SAF markets.

Attempt to avoid emissions reporting errors and double issuance.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) has collaborated with 123Carbon, a stand-alone one-stop carbon insetting retailer, to enable Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) registries to communicate more effectively with one another.

These registries are efficient measures which track SAF's production, acquisition, and consumption, and promote transparency and eliminate fraudulence. The partnership is anticipated to streamline the handling of SAF certificates and prevent setbacks like double issue (issue duplicates) and incorrect reporting of emissions.

Their activities shall be focused around three major things: unique identifier and data harmonization for SAF certificates, exchange of information so as to eliminate double issuance or duplicate records, and resolution of conflicts.

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, added: "Users' trust comes first. Interoperability transparency will have our registries harmonizing so that SAF can do its best to facilitate decarbonization of the aviation industry. Harmonized registry providers are superior. We invite all the stakeholders involved here to cooperate with IATA and 123Carbon for worldwide interoperability among registries."

Jeroen van Heiningen, Managing Director, 123Carbon said: "123Carbon is committed to establishing integrity and trust within the market for Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) applied in multi-modal transport (e.g. air, sea, road & rail). We have found a good partner in IATA, which shares the same beliefs.".

"This partnership allows SAF suppliers, airlines, forwarders, and business participants to utilize our platforms without the threat of double issuance, while still being able to retain their SAF certificates stored digitally on our platform."
