Inclusive Auto LPG Policy Essential for Green Mobility in Bengaluru
A faster, more inclusive policy for Auto LPG in Bengaluru is needed to boost cleaner mobility, support drivers, and help India reach its air quality and emissions goals.
With cities facing air trouble from lots of cars, Auto LPG's pushed in India as a cheaper, cleaner fuel option. Still, it's not taking off as much as it could, especially in places like Bangalore, because it's a pain to get new LPG vehicles registered.
The Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC) recently asked the Karnataka government to fix this, making the registration easier for everyone. The IAC says the way things are now, with slow approvals, makes it tough for drivers and stops Auto LPG from doing its job: cleaning up the air.
Auto LPG can lower the amount of bad stuff like soot, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons, way more than regular gas. Plus, it costs almost 40% less than petrol. There are already over 2.4 million Auto LPG vehicles in India, and over 27 million around the world. This fuel could be way bigger if the government made registration simpler, cut taxes on conversion kits, and worked together with car companies. Auto LPG supporters point to countries like Poland, Korea, Ukraine, and Russia, where clear and nice government policies helped people switch to cleaner fuels quickly.
Industry folks and environmental pros think that backing Auto LPG would help India meet its pollution goals and make city air better right away. Some ideas would be to lower the GST on Auto LPG kits, give drivers and companies money to switch, and make it clear how Auto LPG fits into city clean-air plans. The IAC says the government, manufacturers, and fuel sellers need to team up to make sure everyone gets the health and money upsides of Auto LPG.
