India Marks International Sun Day With Run For Sun, Reports Rooftop Solar Growth

The ‘Run for Sun’ marathon was organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on 3 May to commemorate International Sun Day, and progress on rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was reported.

As per government statistics, around 2.7 lakh rooftop solar installations were made in April 2026, which marked the highest monthly number of installations under the project. About 30 lakh installations have been accomplished through the program to date, with over 45 lakh households covered.

The cumulative capacity of solar power generation in India as of March 2026 is about 150 GW, against 2.82 GW recorded in 2014. Around 50 percent of the total installed capacity of electricity generation is through non-fossil fuels, as per government data.

The event took place at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and consisted of 2 km and 5 km races, where all age groups were involved.

According to officials, rooftop solar continues to be an integral component of the energy policy aimed at increasing decentralized energy production and minimizing reliance on traditional sources.

In recent times, solar capacity growth has been about 50 GW over the past 15 months, based on official statistics. The growth experienced in solar capacity has brought with it issues of energy security, in light of current global energy supplies.

India is ranked third among nations for installed renewable energy capacity. Government initiatives seek to promote rooftop solar energy use in the domestic segment.

Constraints to further expansion include financing, consumer awareness, and grid integration at the distribution level.

The event coincided with the release of updated data on solar capacity and rooftop installations.
