ITU and UNESCO have strengthened cooperation with Equatorial Guinea to promote green digital transformation, climate action, and sustainable development through technology.
ITU and UNESCO have signed a collaboration agreement to support the green digital transformation of Equatorial Guinea. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have committed to strengthening cooperation with Equatorial Guinea to support green digital transformation and leverage technology for sustainable development and climate action in the country.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announced strengthened cooperation to support green digital transformation in Equatorial Guinea, focusing on the use of technology to promote sustainable development and climate action in the country.
The renewed partnership stems from a common vision of the power of Digital for Environmental Resilience, inclusive growth and equitable access to knowledge. Both agencies’ officials noted that digital technologies have the potential to join the fight against climate change and move into the service of development, by closing the digital divide and bringing ecologic and development initiatives into harmony.
The cooperation will be complemented by the efforts of ITU and UNESCO to strengthen collaboration with national stakeholders on environmental sustainability strategies related to digital infrastructure. This includes support for new initiatives promoting renewable energy use in technology, energy efficiency in ICT, and the integration of energy and environmental criteria into digital policy frameworks.
The project also focuses on building local capacity through training programmes and customised courses covering green digital planning, data management, and eco-responsible ICT deployment. The goal is to provide policymakers, civil society, and industry with the resources and expertise needed to ensure that digital transformation contributes to economic development and environmental preservation.
Equatorial Guinea's government welcomed the partnership as both timely and strategic, with digital transformation having to complement the country's priorities on climate action especially in a country like Equatorial Guinea that is susceptible to environmental issues like coastal risks, altered rainfall and energy challenges. Pilot interventions, knowledge sharing workshops and coordination of technical assistance will be conducted as collaborative projects to assist the integration of sustainability in the national digital agenda.
UNESCO and ITU join forces as part of the UNESCO's global efforts to advocate for sustainable digital ecosystems, which are energy efficient, climate resilient and socially inclusive. The two agencies hope to support a technologically sustainable future for Equatorial Guinea while advancing its environmental sustainability objectives.
The growing need for green digital transformation reflects the increasing recognition that sustainability and innovation are closely interconnected in the 21st century.
