Karnataka Partners with GAIL to Set Up 1 GW Renewable Energy Projects

In a significant development towards boosting clean energy, the Karnataka government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GAIL (India) Ltd., a public sector enterprise in the natural gas sector, to establish 1 GW of renewable energy (RE) capacity in the state. The agreement, finalized on May 9, 2025, is estimated to involve an investment of Rs 5,000 crore. This partnership aims to enhance Karnataka’s standing as a green energy hub by adding 1 GW of solar and wind energy projects.

Under the MoU, GAIL plans to diversify its renewable energy portfolio by developing ground-mounted and rooftop solar, floating solar, wind energy, and essential storage solutions. To accelerate the implementation of these projects, GAIL will either acquire land from farmers on a lease basis or seek assistance from the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for land allocation. The government has committed to providing necessary approvals and swift registration for the projects.

This collaboration comes at a time when Karnataka is gaining recognition as an attractive destination for clean energy investments, with favorable policies, a skilled workforce, and abundant land for renewable projects. The state’s existing infrastructure, such as the Pavagada Solar Park, which generates 2,050 MW annually, further boosts its capacity for solar energy production. Additionally, local farmers are offering over 10,000 acres of land for similar future projects.

The partnership is expected to drive economic growth and create job opportunities while advancing Karnataka’s climate goals. The renewable energy initiative aligns with both the state’s sustainable energy objectives and the broader national push towards a cleaner energy future.

This MoU marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration between GAIL and the Government of Karnataka. The focus on renewable energy will not only bolster the state’s energy capacity but also contribute significantly to India’s transition to sustainable energy.
