Kerala may face temporary evening power restrictions until June 30 as rising electricity demand and low reservoir levels create a power shortage across the state.
Kerala could experience short-duration power restrictions during evening hours until June 30 as the state faces a growing gap between electricity demand and available supply, according to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).
The restrictions, if required, are likely to be imposed between 6 pm and midnight, when electricity consumption is usually at its highest. Officials said the move is aimed at maintaining grid stability and preventing larger disruptions.
Why is Kerala Facing a Power Shortage?
The state in currently facing a problem of power shortage by about 900 MW. One of the main reason is that there was a lack of rainfall in the southwest monsoon season which led to low water availability in the reservoirs used for generating electricity from water.
Additionally, there has been an abnormally high demand for electricity. Despite the coming of the monsoon season, there has been high temperature causing people to continue using air conditioners which leads to high demand for electricity. On a daily basis, the demand for electricity has been about 4,900 MW, far higher than the expected figures.
El Niño Adds to the Challenge
The government has attributed this problem partially to El Niño, which is characterized by warm weather and low rainfall. This weather pattern has caused fears that there will be inadequate rainfall in the next few months, further straining the state’s energy sources.
Borrowed Power Must Also Be Returned
One difficulty that KSEB faces is that it must pay back electricity that was used from the northern states under power swap deals in summer. The board had borrowed power to fulfil its obligations in summer and needs to pay back this power during June-September. But due to less generation of hydropower, this has become a tough job.
Government Reviews Situation
A review meeting that was held under the leadership of the state Electricity Minister considered possible ways of securing additional power through electricity markets and dealing with the shortfall. It was indicated that every effort is being done to ensure there are no disruptions.
Consumers Asked to Use Power Wisely
KSEB has urged residents to use electricity carefully, especially during peak evening hours. Consumers have been advised to reduce unnecessary power usage and avoid running high-consumption appliances during periods of high demand.
