A partnership between Levidian and Graphmatech is set to drive advancements in sustainable technologies for the hydrogen sector, focusing on graphene-based solutions to reduce gas leakage and improve material performance in hydrogen storage and transportation.

Levidian and Graphmatech Partner on Graphene H₂ Storage

A partnership between UK climate technology company Levidian and Swedish material technology company Graphmatech will propel clean technologies in the hydrogen sector. The companies' shared ambition is to commercially advance graphene-based polymer solutions for minimizing hydrogen gas loss and maximizing material properties in high-growth applications. The international hydrogen market is poised to experience staggering growth over the next few decades and will be able to capitalize on these advancements with the rising demand for clean hydrogen.

Levidian's pioneering LOOP technology underpins its carbon capture process that extracts carbon from methane before combustion. Not only does this sustainable process minimize the carbon footprint of high-polluting industries but also produces clean hydrogen and top-grade graphene. Graphmatech's Aros Graphene® technology, on the other hand, improves metal and plastic's strength, conductivity, and barrier properties against gas by incorporating graphene, making it ideally suited in hydrogen pipelines and pressure vessels.

The two companies are collaborating to codevelop high-performance polymer-graphene composites, which will provide greater efficiency and safety in storing and transporting hydrogen. Research indicated that adding graphene to the material reduces hydrogen gas leakage by as much as 83%. The above is said to be a gigantic leap, which will play an important role in solving some of the hydrogen industry's most formidable challenges.

The development time would be in Sweden and the UK, with a view to further expanding to other regions of the world, particularly the Middle East, where Levidian will have a production and delivery hub. The expansion would be capable of creating over 250 jobs in the region, direct and indirect. As the hydrogen sector is expanding at a very rapid pace, these developments are imperative in meeting world climate objectives and driving sustainability.

Levidian's and Graphmatech's joint efforts are a testament to the excellence of cross-border and cross-sector cooperation in making actual leaps in technology and ensuring a greener future. With Levidian's technology of capturing carbon and Graphmatech's specialization in graphene material, the businesses are opening doors for having better, more efficient hydrogen transport and storage systems that are safe to boot.
