LG Electronics Cuts Scope 3 Emissions by Nearly 20% Since 2020
LG Electronics has cut Scope 3 emissions by 19.4% since 2020 and is nearing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions target for 2030 ahead of schedule. The 2024–2025 Sustainability Report also confirms a 97.4% global waste recycling rate and a 36% rise in recycled plastic use. LG’s environmental progress is supported by carbon-reduction technologies and stronger internal governance.
LG Electronics announced a remarkable improvement of its environmental initiatives with Scope 3 emission reduction by 19.4% since 2020. The accomplishment is enumerated in the LG Corporation's 2024–2025 Sustainability Report, offering an overview of its current environmental performance and goal in production, emissions, and recycling activities.
The South Korean technology firm attributed its emissions decrease mainly because of the increased application of artificial intelligence and energy-efficient technologies in its operations. Scope 3 emissions are indirect emissions across a company's value chain, such as product use, transportation in the supply chain, and other indirect processes. Smoothing out these emissions is perhaps the most difficult corporate sustainability front to tackle.
Along with Scope 3 enhancements, LG Electronics is making good progress toward its Scope 1 and 2 emission reduction targets, which encompass direct emissions from owned assets and indirect Scope 2 emissions from energy purchased. In 2024, the firm recorded Scope 1 and 2 emissions of 910,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. This places LG within reach of its 2030 target of 878,000 tonnes, far ahead of target.
The firm had a 2030 target for cutting Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 54.6% relative to 2017. LG stated that it is achieving this goal ahead of schedule with its own application of energy-efficient machinery and carbon-saving technology at its factories around the world.
LG Electronics also became the first South Korean home appliance manufacturer in the world whose greenhouse emission reduction goals have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a global network promoting best practices in emissions reporting and monitoring.
LG exceeded its 2030 goal for waste recycling. LG's recycling rate was 97.4% in 2024 among its worldwide manufacturing units, above its initial 95% target at the end of the decade. In 2024, LG recycled more than 532,000 tonnes of old electronics from 91 collection points across 56 countries. The company recycled more than 5 million tonnes of old appliances since 2006.
In the process of recycling materials, LG had boosted the use of recyclable plastic in products by 36% compared to a year ago. This is all in its overall drive to reduce waste and utilize sustainable material in product lines.
Along with environmental development, the sustainability report anticipates LG's internal governance strategy, highlighting compliance, ethics, and monitoring. It asserted that its board of directors is working under independence and openness policies, and that the ESG Committee is assuming more aggressive roles in monitoring sustainability initiatives.
The 2024–2025 Sustainability Report details LG's strategy for environmental stewardship, such as emissions, waste reduction, and the creation of sustainable products. These results indicate that the company is set to achieve, and in certain aspects surpass, its 2030 sustainability objectives.
The complete Sustainability Report was made available on the LG Electronics website with detailed statistics on emissions, recycling performance, and material usage at its global operations.
