India has become the world’s second-largest solar market after surpassing the US in annual solar capacity additions during 2025, according to Union Minister Bhupender Yadav.

Solar Capacity Crosses 155 GW as India Climbs to Global No. 2 Spot

India became the second-largest solar market in the world in 2025, beating the United States in annual solar capacity additions, said Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. This accomplishment shows how quickly India's renewable energy sector is expanding and its increasing importance in the global shift towards cleaner energy sources.

Bhupender Yadav mentioned that "India has come in second in the global solar market, topping the US in yearly additions since 2025. It demonstrates our quick growth in clean energy and helps us build effective, dependable, and eco-friendly solar systems."

The minister says India's solar power capacity jumped from 2.8 GW in 2014 to over 155 GW in 2026 – that's a 5,370% boost! This big growth is thanks to massive solar parks, roof-top panels, helpful government policies, and greater investment in green energy tech.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India added around 37 GW of solar capacity in 2025, beating the United States, which added roughly 34 GW. China still led as the top global solar market. India continues to accelerate its clean energy transition. The nation has crossed 50% non-fossil fuel power way before their Paris Agreement deadline. Also, the government initiatives such as the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana sped up rooftop solar use, helping over four million homes go solar.

Alongside the expansion of renewable energy, the government is also focusing on cleaner transportation. Recently, the Union Cabinet approved support for the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) to enable the phased replacement of ageing trucks and buses across the Delhi-NCR region. The two-year initiative is aimed at reducing vehicular emissions, improving air quality and encouraging the adoption of cleaner and greener mobility solutions. Bhupender Yadav said on social media X platform “Towards cleaner air and sustainable transport! Under the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet has approved support for NCRPB to enable the phased replacement of aging trucks and buses across the Delhi-NCR region. This two-year initiative will help reduce vehicular emissions, improve air quality, and promote the adoption of cleaner and greener mobility solutions, paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable future.”

Industry experts believe that solar deployment is key for India to reach its 500 GW non-fossil fuel goal by 2030. To keep growing, India needs to keep investing in solar stuff, like grids and battery storage. They're also eyeing distributed renewable energy systems to help out. So, more cash in these areas should drive progress over the next few years.
