Mahadhan launches livestock project in Beed to improve farmer income through modern services and training
In a significant effort to improve rural livelihoods, Mahadhan Agritech Limited, a subsidiary of Deepak Fertilisers And Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (DFPCL), has launched the “Mahadhan Livestock Development Project” in the Beed district of Maharashtra’s Marathwada region. This initiative, part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility framework, aims to increase farmers’ income through sustainable livestock practices and better access to modern agricultural services.
The project is being carried out in partnership with BAIF Livelihoods and Development Institute. It was created under the leadership of S. C. Mehta, Chairman and Managing Director of DFPCL, and Parul Mehta. With a strong focus on generating income through livestock, the initiative seeks to build long-term economic resilience among farmers in regions affected by drought.
Project Rollout in Marathwada Region
The Livestock Development Project has launched in Ashti taluka of Beed district, an area often affected by water shortages and farming difficulties. Pramod Jagtap, Associate Director at Ishanya Foundation, the CSR branch of DFPCL, led the inauguration ceremony. Key stakeholders, including Pradeep Khose, Raviraj Jadhav, and Santosh Ekshinge, as well as local officials and villagers, also attended the event.
As part of the project’s initial phase, three Livestock Development Centres have been set up in Pimpalgaon Dani, Dongargaon, and Harinarayan Ashta. These centres will serve as hubs for providing essential livestock services and training to farmers. The company plans to establish a total of ten such centres across the region in phases to ensure wider reach and impact.
Enhancing Livestock Productivity and Sustainability
The initiative is designed to fill important gaps in livestock management and productivity. It offers various interventions, such as artificial insemination services to improve cattle breeds, vaccination campaigns to lower disease-related losses, and the promotion of scientific fodder cultivation to guarantee year-round nutrition for livestock.
Additionally, the project strongly emphasizes training programs. Farmers will learn modern livestock rearing techniques, animal health management, and efficient resource use. These efforts are expected to boost milk production, improve livestock health, and ultimately increase farmers’ income.
Focus on Sustainable Rural Development
Naresh Pinisetti, President – Corporate Governance at DFPCL, discussed the initiative. He emphasized the company’s commitment to creating sustainable solutions for rural communities. He pointed out that livestock development provides a stable additional income stream for farmers, especially where crop yields suffer from climate challenges.
The project supports broader sustainable agriculture goals by combining environmentally friendly practices with economic development. By increasing livestock productivity and resource efficiency, the initiative helps create a more resilient agricultural ecosystem in the region.
Strengthening Agricultural Ecosystems Through CSR
Mahadhan Agritech has been actively working to empower farmers through innovative agricultural solutions. With a strong presence in the fertiliser industry, the company offers crop nutrition products and advisory services that help improve soil health and farm productivity. This new initiative expands its farmer-focused approach to include livestock, addressing various aspects of rural livelihoods.
The collaboration with BAIF, known for its expertise in rural development and livestock programs, strengthens the project’s implementation. Together, the partners aim to provide farmers with access to quality services, technical knowledge, and institutional support.
Long-Term Impact on Farmers’ Income
The Mahadhan Livestock Development Project is expected to provide significant benefits to livestock farmers in Beed. By improving access to veterinary care, advanced breeding techniques, and training, the initiative aims to lower input costs and boost efficiency. Over time, this will help farmers achieve higher and more stable incomes.
Moreover, the project emphasizes community engagement and local participation to ensure inclusive and sustainable benefits. With the phased expansion of Livestock Development Centres, more villages are set to gain from this initiative in the coming months.
As rural India faces challenges related to climate change and income instability, targeted CSR efforts like this are crucial for driving grassroots transformation. Through this project, Mahadhan Agritech reaffirms its commitment to supporting farmers and strengthening the agricultural foundation of the country.
