Project Alby Boosts Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Sweden
Project Alby in Sweden will produce 80,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually, reducing emissions.
Sweden is set to become a leader in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production with the launch of Project Alby, a large-scale e-Fuel plant in Ånge. The initiative, led by Norsk e-Fuel in collaboration with Prime Capital and RES, aims to produce at least 80,000 tons of e-Fuel annually. By utilizing cutting-edge Power-to-Liquid technology, the project will significantly contribute to reducing aviation emissions while aligning with the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation policy, which mandates increased SAF adoption.
Project Alby is a significant milestone in the world's shift towards fossil-free flight. Norsk e-Fuel CEO Karl Hauptmeier underscored the significance of this growth, commenting, "This project is a milestone for Norsk e-Fuel as we enter the Swedish market and further lead the way in offering fossil-free aviation fuels. Collaboration with seasoned partners such as Prime Capital and RES enhances our purpose."
The facility will operate on Power-to-Liquid technology, which involves converting water into hydrogen and combining it with captured carbon dioxide to create e-Kerosene, a sustainable alternative to traditional aviation fuels. This process not only offers a fossil-free solution but also ensures that carbon emissions are effectively recycled, minimizing their impact on the environment. The plant's site in Ånge, spanning 14 hectares, is strategically located due to its proximity to abundant renewable energy resources, mainly cheap electricity, that renders the production process more efficient and financially sound.
Project Alby is the culmination of the close partnership of three industry giants. Norsk e-Fuel contributes its knowledge in the development of SAF, RES offers more than 40 years of renewable energy know-how, and Prime Capital contributes financial support and investment knowledge. Prime Capital Managing Director Jens Walzner pointed to the importance of this cooperation, stating, "This partnership combines Norsk e-Fuel's innovative SAF development, RES' renewable energy knowledge, and Prime Capital's long-standing investment know-how.". This partnership is a key step in reducing aviation emissions and accelerating Sweden’s transition to a more sustainable future.”
RES, who have been instrumental in the pre-development work on the Ånge site, will also continue to back the project. Matilda Afzelius, Nordics CEO at RES, highlighted the ambition of the initiative, saying, "The potential for Alby project to produce 80,000 tons of SAF per year is a significant milestone for both the green energy sector and Ånge municipality."
Project Alby not only strengthens Sweden’s position in the global SAF market but also aligns with the EU’s broader climate goals. The initiative benefits from financial support under the InvestEU Fund, a European investment program designed to accelerate green transition projects. By leveraging EU funding and regulatory backing, the project has a solid foundation for long-term success.
The aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, and sustainable fuel alternatives are essential in achieving this goal. With Project Alby, Sweden is taking a leadership role in the development of industrial-scale e-Fuel production, providing a viable pathway for aviation’s shift away from fossil fuels. The plant’s integration into one of Europe’s leading green hydrogen-driven industrial clusters further enhances its sustainability credentials, ensuring that it plays a critical role in the continent’s transition toward cleaner energy.
As Norsk e-Fuel, Prime Capital, and RES join forces, Project Alby represents a powerful example of how strategic collaboration can drive the green transition forward. With its potential to reshape the future of aviation fuel, this initiative not only benefits Sweden but also sets a precedent for sustainable aviation advancements worldwide.
