The People’s Climate Dictionary was launched at Mumbai Climate Week to present climate terminology in more accessible language for wider public understanding.

Public Resource on Climate Language Introduced in Mumbai

A public resource titled the People’s Climate Dictionary was launched during Mumbai Climate Week to address concerns about the accessibility of climate-related language.

The launch took place at the end of a session on Storytelling and Climate Action, moderated by writer and filmmaker Sumit Roy. The discussion focused on how narratives influence public understanding of climate change and examined the role of language in shaping participation in climate-related conversations.

Jhoomar Mehta and Sudipti Saxena, founders of Prod, introduced the dictionary at the event. They stated that the initiative seeks to simplify commonly used climate terms so that people from different backgrounds can better understand climate concepts and how these issues relate to everyday life.

The People’s Climate Dictionary is an initiative of Mumbai Climate Week and has been curated by Prod in collaboration with Project Mumbai. According to the organisers, the definitions were developed through consultations with citizens and young people, with the aim of reflecting how climate change is experienced at the community level.

Speakers at the launch said that climate impacts are widely felt, but the language used in climate discussions often remains technical. They added that the dictionary is intended to support wider public understanding and engagement on climate-related issues.
