Reliance NU Energies Wins Major Solar BESS Project
Reliance NU Energies secures 350 MW solar + 175 MW/700 MWh BESS project from SJVN at ₹3.33/kWh tariff.
In a significant stride towards cementing its position in India’s renewable energy landscape, Reliance Power Limited, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Reliance NU Energies Private Limited, has received the prestigious Letter of Award (LOA) from SJVN Limited, a leading Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise. The award pertains to the development of a 350 MW inter-state transmission system (ISTS)-connected solar power project coupled with a 175 MW/700 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
This project win further strengthens Reliance NU Energies’ earlier achievement of securing the largest allocation in the SJVN-led ISTS-connected Solar + BESS auction. To execute the awarded project, Reliance NU Energies will be installing a total of 600 MW of Solar DC capacity alongside a 175 MW/700 MWh BESS capacity. This scale of development not only highlights the company’s technical and operational capabilities in integrating large-scale renewable energy systems with storage solutions but also sets a benchmark in India’s journey towards a reliable, dispatchable green energy future.
Reliance NU Energies had emerged as the successful bidder in the highly competitive auction conducted by SJVN, securing the project at a fixed tariff of ₹3.33 per kilowatt-hour for a tenure of 25 years. This tariff, arrived at through a transparent and competitive bidding process, reflects the company’s focus on delivering cost-effective renewable energy solutions without compromising on quality or efficiency. The auction itself witnessed intense industry participation, with 19 developers vying for the opportunity and 18 qualifying for the final e-reverse auction stage. The tender was oversubscribed by more than four times, underscoring the growing interest and investor confidence in hybrid renewable energy projects with storage components.
The awarded project was part of a larger tender floated by SJVN, encompassing 1,200 MW of solar power capacity and 600 MW/2,400 MWh of BESS capacity. The scale and ambition of the tender reflect the Indian government’s strategic thrust on increasing renewable energy penetration while ensuring grid stability and dispatchability through energy storage solutions.
Once commissioned, the latest project will add a significant 600 MW of Solar DC and 700 MWh of BESS capacity to Reliance Power’s growing clean energy portfolio. With this addition, the company’s total clean energy pipeline now stands at an impressive 2.4 GW of Solar DC capacity and over 2.5 GWh of BESS capacity, making Reliance Power the largest player in the integrated Solar + BESS segment in India. This leadership is not just a numerical milestone but also a reflection of the company’s deep commitment to advancing India’s clean energy mission.
The win is strategically aligned with Reliance Power’s long-term vision of transitioning towards cleaner and more sustainable sources of energy. The successful bidding and acquisition of this project reinforce the company’s dedication to innovation, technology leadership, and stakeholder value creation in the renewable energy space. It also exemplifies Reliance Power’s evolving role as a key enabler in India’s ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, as part of its commitment under the Paris Agreement.
Reliance Power’s strategic foray into the Solar + BESS segment is aimed at addressing some of the critical challenges of the renewable sector, particularly intermittency and integration with the national grid. By coupling solar generation with large-scale battery storage, the company seeks to offer reliable, dispatchable power to the grid, thereby enhancing overall energy security and enabling a smoother transition to a low-carbon economy.
The project is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities during the construction and operational phases and contribute positively to the local economy. Furthermore, it aligns with national and global sustainability goals, emphasizing energy access, carbon footprint reduction, and long-term environmental stewardship.
The receipt of the LOA from SJVN marks a milestone moment for Reliance NU Energies and reflects its emergence as a trusted and capable partner for complex, high-value renewable infrastructure projects. As India accelerates its green energy transformation, the role of private sector players like Reliance Power in scaling up sustainable energy solutions will be critical in shaping the country’s energy future.
Through this initiative, Reliance Power has not only consolidated its leadership in India’s clean energy sector but also reinforced its reputation as a forward-looking energy enterprise committed to innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
