The programme distributes fresh produce to underserved communities through a network of farmers and partners.
Shibulal Family Philanthropic Initiatives (SFPI) has initiated an innovative scheme called Navahitam, which aimed to improve access to fresh and nutritious foods among the underprivileged sections of society, particularly children and the elderly.
This program seeks to support UN SDG 2 aimed at ending hunger. The program works through collaborations between farmers, suppliers, and other community organizations, ensuring fresh foods are delivered to those in need in a very efficient manner.
Through this program, fresh food is sourced using the help of farmers and wholesalers and then supplied to the targeted communities using different community-based organizations. This model tries to ensure better delivery of nutritious foods in addition to minimizing food wastage.
From the data provided, it can be seen that the fruits and vegetables produced are above 242,000 kilograms, with organic snacks being more than 2,790 kilograms, and eggs exceeding 54,000. These products have been supplied by more than 25 farmers from the Tamil Nadu state to different locations such as child care centers, old age homes, and health centers.
This project is not new because it began as a pilot program in 2024 and presently serves around 1,500 people per day. It runs mainly out of institutions like Maple Tree Farms and farms in Hosur, contributing significantly to its supplies of fresh and nutritious food.
Kumari Shibulal, Founder and Chairperson of SFPI, said, “At SFPI, we believe that access to nutritious food is fundamental to dignity and well-being. This World Earth Day, Navahitam is a reminder that sustainability and social equity must go hand in hand. By connecting responsible surplus management across farming, fresh produce and grocery wholesaler systems with community nutrition, we are working towards a future where both people and the planet thrive.”
SFPI said it plans to expand the initiative to other cities and distribute more food and increase the distribution volumes in the coming months. The organisation has been involved in philanthropic work for over 25 years. The area focused are education, healthcare, and community support.
