Singtel's 58MW Data Centre Project Gets Green Loan

Singtel Secures S$643m Green Loan for New Data Centre in Singapore

Singtel has secured a landmark S$643 million green loan to fund its data center arm Nxera on the construction of a new, state-of-the-art, sustainable-capable data center facility located in Singapore. Dubbed DC Tuas, this new facility will be one of the most connected and energy-efficient data centers in the country.

Some of the major global banks that back the green loan are DBS, OCBC, Standard Chartered, HSBC, and UOB. Proceeds from the loan will be used to reduce carbon emissions, lower energy consumption, resource optimization, and also for a contribution to Singapore's digital economy.

DC Tuas will be designed to provide power supply up to 58 MW and will feature many innovative new technologies to better support the delivery of maximum energy efficiency. It has already won the prestigious Green Mark Platinum from Singapore's Building and Construction Authority in conjunction with the Infocomm Media Development Authority for its sustainable design and operation.

It will be the next generation in liquid cooling, the best of the system in terms of doing high-intensity computing like AI and enterprise workloads. It can be possible to support more than 30 kW of power within every rack. So this will take care of rising demands for high-performance computing related to on-premises AI, machine learning, and big data analytics.

It should meet the growing demands for processing data but with no damage to the environment. Its operations must be launched completely before 2026. In addition to having the cooling capacity in DC Tuas, all efforts with land, power, and water shall be maximized.

One of the good measures for the performance of the data centers is Power Usage Effectiveness, or PUE, which actually measures how efficient the data center uses its energy. DC Tuas will be operated at PUE of less than 1.25; therefore, it will be one of the most efficient in the telecommunications industry.

Singtel's data center unit, Nxera, has been tackling the sustainability goals. These include attaining a net-zero emission Scope 1 and 2 by 2028, it said, ensuring that the operating model is based on sustainability values. The company's green loan forms part and parcel of its Olives long-term sustainable finance program, thus linking the sustainability goals with their financial strategy over the long-term.

Conclusion:In 2023, Singtel received a green loan of S$535 million for two other data centers it is developing-DC West and DC Kim Chuan. The move is part of a general strategy in which Singtel supports the Singaporean digital economy while advancing this sustainable agenda a step further. That will be another effort Singtel puts into developing a most sustainable telecommunication industry and digital infrastructure ever. It offers green solutions towards the growing need for digital service and supports all of the economy of the nation to be more green.
