In an interview with ResponsibleUs, Prakash Shah, Director of Engineering at The Leela Gandhinagar and Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre, spoke about how the hotel is incorporating sustainability into its daily operations to achieve its sustainable goals, while also doing its part.
How does your hotel incorporate sustainability into its daily operations?
We have implemented a host of initiatives that contribute to sustainability. These measures include the adoption of eco-friendly products and toiletries including bamboo toothbrushes and combs to reduce plastic waste and using compostable garbage bags in the hotel. We also use recycled plastic bags and reusable laundry bags. To minimise the use of chemicals, we use biodegradable cleaning products. We have replaced plastic wrapping material with paper wrapping and use refillable glass water bottles instead of plastic ones.
What measures have you implemented to reduce energy and water consumption?
We have shifted to energy-efficient LED lighting in the entire property to reduce energy consumption. We are using smart thermostats and energy management systems to optimise heating and cooling in guest rooms. Solar panels have been installed for water heating. We are reducing water consumption by installing low-flow faucets and showers, and dual-flush toilets. Moreover, we use recycled water for gardening and other non-potable uses. Further, we have installed rainwater harvesting system to conserve water.
How do you ensure responsible waste management and minimise landfill waste?
We have put in place comprehensive recycling measures and composting initiatives to minimise landfill waste. The Leela Gandhinagar has entered into a contract with a recycler to recycle all the waste and has achieved zero waste certification.
What sustainable building materials or eco-friendly designs have you used in your properties?
We have used eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, reclaimed wood, and recycled glass in construction. We have dry walls in place of brick walls. We are happy to share that we have a green building certification from IGBC.
How do you source food and other supplies to promote local and sustainable businesses?
We source organic, locally produced ingredients for our restaurants to support sustainable agriculture. We have partnered with local artisans and suppliers and ensure fair-trade coffee and tea, and ethically sourced toiletries.
What initiatives do you have to reduce single-use plastics and promote reusable alternatives?
At The Leela Gandhinagar, we believe that even small steps can make a huge difference. We are using refillable glass water bottles instead of plastic varieties to reduce plastic usage. Eco-friendly toiletries such as bamboo toothbrushes, combs, shaving blades, etc. in guest rooms have replaced the plastic varieties. We use only paper straws and wooden stirrers in the hotel.
How does your hotel contribute to local biodiversity conservation efforts?
Our landscaping features native plants that support the local ecosystems and reduce water usage. We also contribute to the preservation of natural habitats within and around our property. We are also focused on creating a green and sustainable environment by developing a forested area within the premises. This initiative aims to attract various bird species, enhancing biodiversity and promoting ecological balance.
What renewable energy sources do you use to power your hotel?
We use solar heaters and heat pumps for heating water. Heat pump chilled water is used for the cold room refrigeration system. The laundry and dry cleaning machine chilling is from normal water in place of refrigeration system or cooling tower. We are also planning to shift entirely to solar power to meet the property’s energy needs.
How do you engage and educate guests about sustainable practices during their stay?
We have incentives for guests who participate in our green programmes, such as towel reuse initiatives.
What certifications or sustainability standards does your hotel adhere to?
We have achieved green building certification from IGBC. We were recognised by CII as the Best Energy Efficiency Commercial Building under CII’s National Energy Efficiency Circle competition. We conduct regular audits and assessments to measure environmental performance and improvements.
How do you support local communities through employment, fair wages, or social initiatives?
We are committed to the uplift of the local communities. We hire local staff and ensure fair wages and safe working conditions for them. We support community-led initiatives, including educational programmes and social enterprises. We have also partnered with local artists to promote and preserve the regional culture through various events.
What steps are taken to ensure ethical and eco-friendly housekeeping and laundry practices?
We use eco-friendly and biodegradable cleaning products to minimise the use of chemicals. We have implemented water-efficient laundry practices, including cold-water washing and eco-certified detergents, to reduce water and energy usage. We also have linen and towel reuse programmes that help conserve both water and energy.
How do you measure and track your carbon footprint, and what actions are being taken to reduce it?
We regularly measure our carbon emissions and have very specific reduction targets. We offset our carbon footprint through tree-planting initiatives and carbon credit programmes.
How do you handle sustainable transportation options for guests and staff?
We encourage the use of public transport by our staff. The infrastructure within the hotel is bicycle & pedestrian-friendly. We continuously improve our sustainability efforts to create a greener, more responsible travel experience for our guests.
