Uttar Pradesh installed a record 71,888 residential rooftop solar systems in June, strengthening its leadership in India's rooftop solar sector while accelerating the country's clean energy transition.
Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the country's top-performing state in residential rooftop solar adoption after installing a record 71,888 rooftop solar systems in June under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The achievement marks the highest number of residential rooftop installations completed by any Indian state in a single month, reflecting the rapid pace of solar adoption across households.
The state's momentum has been building steadily over the past few months. With more than 10.89 lakh applications received under the scheme, Uttar Pradesh has already completed the installation of approximately 6.36 lakh residential rooftop solar systems, making it one of the largest contributors to India's clean energy transition. Officials believe that if the current pace continues, the state could soon overtake Maharashtra in cumulative residential rooftop solar installations, while Gujarat continues to hold the top position nationally.
With the rapid increase, the state’s renewable energy capacity has seen a massive rise. In addition to that, the installed rooftop capacity in Uttar Pradesh for residential use is currently above 2,148 MWs in terms of generation of solar energy capacity. The government has ensured that over ₹5,500 crore in subsidy money reaches their bank accounts.
Apart from generating clean energy through solar systems, this initiative has also brought about huge economic benefits for the region. In Uttar Pradesh, there have been over 7,000 sellers and companies that install solar panels, which have helped create more than 80,000 direct and indirect jobs. There has also been a creation of business worth more than ₹40 crore every day.
According to officials, the total output of these rooftop solar installations comes out to be approximately 96 lakh units of electricity daily. The fact that these installations take place on rooftops and not on open land means that nearly 9,000 acres of land have been saved from being used for other solar installations.
This new development is another step forward based on the good progress that has been made in Uttar Pradesh recently. By April 2026, the state already managed to break its own record having installed 51,882 rooftop solar power plants during a single month. The state was also the first in India to install more than 50,000 rooftop solar power plants for three months running in March, April, and May.
The progress made by the state is in line with that of the Centre's policy regarding renewable energy production as part of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which was started in February 2024 with an estimated budget of ₹75,021 crore. The goal is to provide solar roofs for one crore households so that they can reduce their expenditure on electricity production while simultaneously helping India meet its 500 GW non-fossil fuel power generation target for 2030.
Uttar Pradesh's recent success is an indication of the increasing importance of rooftop solar energy in India’s energy transition. The growing awareness among consumers along with prompt payment of subsidies and installation facilities will only enhance the state’s reputation as one that leads in distributed renewable energy, in addition to ensuring India’s energy security in the future.
