AI-Driven Data Centers in India Turn to Gas-Based Energy for Reliability

February 12, 2025, New Delhi: The need for a steady power supply to operate data centres is growing quickly as India becomes a global centre for digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI). During India Energy Week 2025, which took place in Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, industry executives and policymakers convened for the "Gas for AI Transition in India – GATI" discussion to discuss this expanding energy need.

During the conversation, representatives from Crown LNG, Google Distributed Cloud, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Indian Gas Exchange, and JL were among the energy and technology industry professionals. In keeping with India's goal of having zero net emissions by 2070, the panel discussed how to position the nation as a major participant in AI-driven data centres.

Data centres are anticipated to grow significantly as AI use picks up speed, with worldwide power demand predicted to increase by 160% by 2030. A dependable and expandable energy infrastructure is necessary for this surge. As renewable energy sources continue to expand, gas-based power plants are viewed as a vital answer because they provide stability, flexible scalability, and reduced emissions. In order to fulfil growing energy demands and assist India's transition to sustainable energy, industry executives stressed the significance of developing a robust gas infrastructure.

India has set aggressive climate targets, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 45% by 2030. A sustainable and well-rounded method of powering AI-driven data centres may be achieved by combining gas-based energy sources with renewable energy sources like solar and wind. The Paris AI Summit 2025 is highlighting international discussions on AI's role in sustainable development, which coincide with this discussion.

The occasion emphasised the necessity of a robust gas ecosystem to support industrial expansion and energy security. Investments in dependable and greener energy sources will be essential to sustaining operational effectiveness and reaching sustainability goals as India's data centre and artificial intelligence industries grow.
