Andhra Pradesh has asked developers to expedite renewable energy projects, focusing on execution delays despite large investment commitments in the sector.
The Andhra Pradesh government has asked renewable energy developers to speed up the execution of their projects, signifying a change in focus from investment commitments to actual execution timelines for the state’s growing clean energy capacity.
AP’s officials have expressed their concerns over the delayed execution of the projects despite the large-scale commitments that have already been made in the space. This change in focus is being driven by the objective of making Andhra Pradesh a prominent destination for the development of clean energy capacity.
AP has attracted large-scale investment commitments in the space in recent times, with commitments totalling almost ₹3 lakh crore in various clean energy segments. However, the officials have expressed their concerns over the delayed execution timelines for the projects that have already been committed in the space.
During discussions with industry players and the government, it has been emphasised that the execution timelines for the projects are crucial for efficient utilisation of land that has already been allocated for the purpose.
There has also been an indication of tighter project milestone tracking, with the government assuring that developers will be required to meet the specified timelines. In the past, the government had pointed out cases where companies acquired land but did not proceed to undertake the projects, hence the need to allocate the same to active developers.
The move to improve the execution rate of projects is in line with the overall strategy of the Andhra Pradesh government to create a large-scale ecosystem for renewable energy production. The state has indicated its capacity plans, including solar and wind power, as well as investments in storage and green hydrogen.
According to the government, the execution rate of projects will be critical to meet the increasing electricity demand, as well as to integrate the generated electricity into the grid. At the same time, investments are being made in the transmission infrastructure, including the development of new substations.
The focus on quicker implementation may also be seen as part of a broader policy trend in which governments are increasingly focusing on implementation results rather than project announcement. Delays in project commissioning have been seen to impact power supply planning, investors’ sentiment, and climate targets.
Andhra Pradesh remains an attractive destination for clean energy investments, and there appears to be a new phase of implementation. Coordination between project developers, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies is likely to be key to achieving Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy targets.
