Arunachal Pradesh Opens First Commercial Coal Mine
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy Inaugurates State’s First Commercial Coal Mine at Namchik Namphuk.
On October 6, 2025, India’s Ministry of Coal announced the inauguration of Namchik Namphuk Coal Mine in Changlang district, marking the first commercial coal mining project in Arunachal Pradesh. Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, and the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, officiated the opening.
The inauguration included a Bhumi Pujan ceremony, a tree-planting drive under the “100-tree plantation initiative,” the formal handover of the mining lease, and the deployment of machinery with CPPL to commence operations in the Namchik-Namphuk Central Coal Block.
During his address, the Union Minister described the mine’s launch as “a symbol of new hope and a significant step toward energy security and regional development in the Northeast.” He further stated that the mine holds reserve of 1.5 crore tonnes of coal and has become operational immediately.
The Chief Minister emphasized the project’s role in boosting Arunachal Pradesh’s economy by creating jobs, generating steady revenues, and attracting future investments in the local mining and industrial sectors.
Officials noted that the mine will contribute significantly to regional development, strengthen India’s energy security, and support the government’s goal of achieving Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
