Asuene Expands To U.S. With NZero Acquisition

Tokyo-based climate tech company Asuene has taken a strategic step into the North American sustainability space through the acquisition of Nevada-based carbon management startup NZero. This is a historic step for Asuene as it extends its global reach to the U.S., entering one of the globe's most vibrant and intricate climate tech markets.

Founded in 2019, Asuene has developed a solid reputation as a global climate solution provider with a base of approximately 10,000 clients operating in businesses. Asuene provides various services to enable organizations to achieve their net-zero aspirations, such as the reduction, reporting, and measurement of carbon dioxide emissions. Besides its flagship carbon accounting services, Asuene provides greenhouse gas (GHG) consulting to assist companies in their green journeys.

The NZero acquisition demonstrates Asuene's dedication to furthering its vision of becoming the world's premier climate tech firm. NZero, established in 2021, has created a next-generation carbon management platform that utilizes real-time data and artificial intelligence to automate the gathering and analysis of energy consumption and emissions. Its technology facilitates the precise measurement of carbon production in Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (indirect from energy consumption), and Scope 3 (indirect from supply chains and other operations) emissions. This degree of detail allows organizations—ranging from businesses and NGOs to government agencies—to make better decisions regarding emissions reductions and cost savings.

Through this acquisition, Asuene not only acquires access to NZero's cutting-edge technology but also solidifies its presence in the U.S. climate tech industry. NZero's solutions are already implemented in more than 20 cities and states, supporting a range of energy-intensive sectors such as transportation, energy, water, digital systems, communications, and data centers. This wide-scale implementation provides Asuene with a rich platform to further develop its services and influence across the U.S. and beyond.

Kohei Nishiwada, Asuene's Founder and CEO, spoke to the importance of this acquisition for Asuene's long-term success and purpose. "Working with NZero represents an important step in Asuene's mission to be the world's preeminent climate tech company," said Nishiwada. "With decarbonization taking center stage in long-term business strategy, our cooperation with NZero allows for cutting-edge, data-driven solutions supporting measurable results.". By uniting our capabilities across Japan and the U.S., we’re empowering businesses and governments with the tools they need to reduce emissions, optimize energy use, and meet regulatory and stakeholder expectations with confidence.”

The timing of Asuene’s entry into the U.S. market is notable. Whereas federal climate policies during the current Trump administration have witnessed a roll-back of decarbonization initiatives, numerous state and local governments are still pursuing ambitious climate plans. This split has produced a complicated but opportunity-laden climate for climate tech companies, with market forces also exerting increasing pressure on corporations to improve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. Asuene's location in this transforming environment puts it in a position to assist both public and private sector players making efforts to attain sustainability targets despite regulatory ambiguity.

Nishiwada was echoed by NZero CEO Josh Weber, who was optimistic regarding the potential combination of the two firms. This partnership enables NZero to drive GHG emissions measurement and reduction implementation in the United States and throughout Asuene's international operations as a fully integrated partner," Weber said. "As climate change increases and global sustainability standards develop, bringing together industry experience and innovation is essential in preparing organizations with the tools to make responsible, measurable actions toward net-zero emissions.

By combining NZero's live carbon intelligence platform and Asuene's international sustainability experience, the partnership seeks to establish a new benchmark for emissions monitoring and reduction measures. As governments and companies globally increase their emphasis on environmental responsibility, the merger places Asuene at the forefront of providing sophisticated, actionable climate solutions on a global level.

The deal is not only a corporate expansion, but also a strategic alignment of vision and capability in the battle against climate change. Through its foray into the American market, Asuene stands to make a significant contribution towards how emissions are quantified, managed, and ultimately reduced in one of the most powerful economies in the world.
