BRICS Nations Deepen Cooperation on Energy Security and Sustainability

BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Energy Ministers have agreed to increase cooperation in energy security, sustainability, innovation and capacity building, and resilient energy infrastructure at the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting in Gurugram, as India leads the BRICS Group in 2026.

The meeting served as a venue for the energy ministers and top officials of the BRICS member countries to exchange ideas on how best to tackle the current energy sector challenges and take actionable measures to ensure the provision of reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy. The communiqué underscores the bloc's efforts to meet the growing demand for energy, while promoting environmental sustainability and economic development.

The importance of considering the national conditions, development priorities and the country's energy transition processes were among the major themes of the discussions. Member countries agreed that policies should be flexible, meaning that member countries are free to adopt policies according to their national needs, and more energy cooperation among countries is encouraged.

The ministers also noted cooperation in the area of advanced technologies, like smart grids, energy storage systems, hydrogen, biofuels, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and carbon capture technologies. These measures are expected to reinforce energy resilience and boost innovation in the BRICS countries.

The creation of BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids and Energy Storage was one of the most important projects of the Indian Chairmanship with respect to the exchange of knowledge, research and technological cooperation among the member nations.

India stressed upon the need for creating safe, diverse and transparent energy value chains along with using more of clean energy for fulfilling the increasing energy needs of the world. All the member nations agreed that they would cooperate with each other for creating resilient and affordable energy systems, which would ensure sustainable development.

The agreement is another step towards strengthening cooperation between the BRICS nations in the global power sector and reflects the growing momentum of BRICS in promoting sustainable development and future energy security.
