Together with Sagest (Society for Environment and Agricultural Sustainability), Bridgestone India has started a Nutritional Fruit Orchard Project in Sulawad Village, Dhar District, Madhya Pradesh. This women-led project aims for rural income generation, dietary improvement, and environmental sustainability. Spanning 4 acres, the orchard contains over 1,300 fruit-bearing trees of more than 15 types grown using sustainable practices and aided by neighborhood residents and Bridgestone volunteers.
In its first year, the orchard showed good management and community participation by reaching a 96% tree survival rate. Local women have taken control of a nursery with 1,000 saplings and are making compost and organic pesticides from garden trash, therefore advancing organic farming techniques. Financial independence for the women running the orchard will come from the regular income from the sale of fruits once the trees are ripe. Furthermore aiding 251 household kitchen gardens, the initiative gives families fresh vegetables and improves village dietary nutrition. Consistent training sessions have given residents knowledge and abilities, therefore promoting environmental awareness and a feeling of ownership.
Among the stakeholders are Bridgestone, Sagest, the local panchayat, which contributed the land, and women maintaining the orchard. Staff and students from a nearby government residential school also participate to produce a cooperative project. This project combines sustainable farming with community-driven action to match broader goals of rural development and women's empowerment. The orchard not only resolves food security but also sets an example for how corporate efforts may support ongoing rural transformation.
The Bridgestone India's Nutritional Fruit Orchard Project shows how integrating social and environmental objectives could help to change lives, health, and environmental awareness. By empowering women to head agricultural initiatives, the project generates a wave effect. High tree survival and active community involvement in its first year set a solid base for future expansion for the projects. Once the orchard develops, it is supposed to serve as a sustainable source of income and nourishment for Sulawad Village, maybe motivating other projects around.
