CBRE Expands Mobile Healthcare for Construction Workers

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) initiative, Ek Pehal, CBRE South Asia will be expanding it's Healthcare outreach to Construction Workers in New Delhi with the addition of two new mobile medical units. These two new units will increase the number of mobile medical units being operated by the company and/or in collaboration with the Smile Foundation, to a total of 6.

The newly added mobile medical units will provide onsite, Outpatient Department(OPD); consultations for both construction workers and migrant workers, based at their respective locations in and around Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi/NCR, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The unit will dispense medicines to the construction workers and perform basic diagnostic tests and provide a referral service in instances where the construction worker requires a higher level of medical care. The mobile medical units will also provide preventive health education and capacity-building initiatives, in conjunction with the Government's current health schemes.

The initiative was launched in 2024–25 to help reduce healthcare barriers for workers that have difficulty accessing regular medical facilities because of long working hours, mobility problems and lack of knowledge or information. Since its inception, the initiative has impacted almost 100,000 workers (both directly and indirectly) across the various project sites and will assist approximately 48,600 additional beneficiaries during this year via the opening of two new medical units.

The company provided data showing the increase in clinical support provided via Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). More than 4,000 outpatient (OPD) visits have taken place in cities since the awarding of MMU contracts. In addition, over 650 women employed and/or living in close proximity to construction projects received antenatal and postnatal care through the initiative. Over 1,500 patients were referred to receive additional care from advanced medical facilities based on identified medical conditions. Approximately 200 educational transition sessions were also conducted to educate employees about preventive health habits and overall health and wellness.

The Ek Pehal program is focused on helping those in need of social development as well as providing health care to migrant construction workers and their families. In addition to providing health care services for this population, CBRE has created programs for working with migrant construction workers to also address their educational and infrastructure needs in development of slums at the same time in selected locations.

CBRE further states that all actions taken under their Ek Pehal Program have been developed to meet the needs of the particular community receiving a service, so that the efforts of CBRE are directed toward meeting those needs and providing for practical application of the benefit received.

Ek Pehal began in India in 2019 and since then has impacted roughly 2.5 lakh people through its broader CSR activities and to date in its entirety.

The company aligns its CSR Model with respect to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in reference to hunger, health, education, clean water and sanitation, reduced inequalities and sustainable cities. CBRE's mobile health unit initiative is used to build the resilience of urban communities by bringing essential service resources directly to the workers that are supporting ongoing development and construction activities in major urban centres.
