India Unveils Guidelines for 72,300 Public EV Charging Stations

Boosting Clean Mobility Infrastructure

India has launched new functional guidelines for the deployment of 72,300 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations under the PME-DRIVE scheme, promising a nationwide infrastructure boost for the clean mobility revolution. The ₹2,000 crore initiative features a tiered subsidy structure:

  • 100% subsidy for government offices, domestic townships, hospitals, and schools offering public access.

  • 70–80% subsidy for transport hubs, highways, retail spaces, and battery-swapping locations.

Implementation Oversight

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) will oversee the rollout as the designated project implementation agency. Priority will be given to:

  • Cities with populations over one million

  • State capitals

  • Major transport corridors

  • Metro-linked hubs

  • Smart cities

Subsidies are performance-based and will be disbursed in two tranches, contingent on project completion and operational milestones.

Targets and Impact

The scheme’s deployment targets include:

  • 22,100 fast chargers for cars

  • 1,800 fast chargers for buses

  • Over 48,000 chargers for two- and three-wheelers

Expert View

Experts believe the move could dramatically reduce “range anxiety” and accelerate EV adoption across India. By building a robust EV ecosystem, the initiative also strengthens India’s global competitiveness in clean mobility.
