CFA Institute Renames ESG Investing Certificate To Sustainable Investing Certificate

According to the letter sent to certificate-holders, CFA Institute has changed its name to "Sustainable Investing Certificate" from "Certificate in ESG Investing", reported ESG Today.

The name change is quite staunch considering the growing political controversy that has surrounded the term "ESG" in the US, particularly at the Republican-led opposition. Lawsuits and divestures have targeted asset managers that have adopted ESG investing policies.

First launched in 2021, the certificate was aimed at educating investment professionals about integrating ESG factors into decision-making. As such, the CFA Institute also stated that the term better outlines the certificate's intention vis-a-vis its longer-term impacts and goals in relation to investments; the meaning of "ESG investing" has varied from market to market.

Despite the rebranding, the curriculum will remain unchanged. The new name will take effect on April 8, 2025.
