Delhi’s three major landfill sites Ghazipur, Bhalswa, and Okhla will now be processed under the Central Government’s Solid Waste Management Rules 2026.
The three landfill mountains of Delhi will now be disposed of as per the Central Government’s Solid Waste Management Rules 2026. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has approved the amendments in the conditions of the Request for Proposal (RFP) in Phase III to remove the remaining waste from the landfill sites.
During a Standing Committee meeting, some modifications in the terms of the RFP were approved for the disposal of the waste that is currently lying at the Ghazipur, Bhalswa, and Okhla landfill sites. According to the new terms, both old and new waste at these sites will have to be treated as per the new terms.
Now, any agency taking part in the RFP process will be required to abide by these new conditions. According to a senior MCD government official, the Central Government has issued notification for the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, which will be enforced from April 1, 2026. As per the previous rules, waste segregation was done on the basis of two types of waste: wet and dry waste. But now, segregation will be done on the basis of four types of waste before processing. Moreover, only those wastes will be sent to landfills that are not recyclable or cannot be used for waste-to-energy generation. Since MCD is bound by the new rules, new conditions have been added to the contracts for disposing of landfill waste.
Notably, the Okhla landfill is set to be closed by July 2026, Bhalswa by December 2026, and Ghazipur by December 2027. In Phase II, MCD has already started the processing of 30 lakh metric tonnes of waste at each landfill site. The rest will be dealt with in Phase III.
