Delhi’s Air Quality Improves
As Delhi's air quality gets better, the first level of pollution control rules has been removed across the NCR.
Delhi’s current situation has been reviewed and it has recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 140, which comes under the ‘Moderate’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) daily report. Thanks to ongoing improvement in air quality and positive weather forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), officials have reviewed the current situation.
The Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), under the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), held a meeting to review the air quality conditions across Delhi NCR. It is suggested that the AQI will continue to stay in the ‘Moderate’ range, Based on the consistent improvement in air quality and forecasts. The committee decided to lift Stage-I restrictions of GRAP across the entire NCR, effective immediately. However, the Commission highlighted that even after the condition has been improved, all concerned departments in Delhi and NCR must continue to follow air pollution control measures. This means all the departments must follow orders, rules, and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), CPCB, state governments, and pollution control boards.
Agencies are needed to ensure that they focus on implementing dust control measures and stick to the deadlines mentioned in CAQM’s comprehensive air pollution policy. These steps are important to ensure air quality doesn’t go back into the ‘Poor’ category. The CAQM Sub-Committee will keep monitoring the air quality and may make further decisions based on future forecasts and the levels of pollution.
