Water systems in Europe are now being subjected to a combination of climate-related events such as floods, water scarcity, and deteriorating water quality, according to a new analysis by the engineering and consultancy group Sweco.

The analysis indicated that climate-related interruptions are now occurring not only in many European regions but are also causing stress on infrastructure as well as water supply systems in Europe.

According to research, flooding and drought are now occurring in the same regions within shorter time spans, making water management systems more difficult.

Furthermore, researchers have pointed out that decreasing water quality is another issue that has come up. Pollution, inadequate infrastructure, and climate-related interruptions are now becoming problems for freshwater systems in parts of Europe.

It was observed in the report that urbanisation and high industrial demand are putting more stress on the water systems of Europe. Some regions in Europe are witnessing agricultural, industrial, and domestic competition for limited water supplies during scarcity periods.

Analysis showed that much of the infrastructure in Europe was designed to cope with climate situations in the past, but may not be sufficient for dealing with extreme weather occurrences.

Scientists studying water and environmental groups have argued for increased spending on climate change adaptation measures, such as flood prevention systems, drainage improvements, and recycling facilities for water.

The results come as European nations continue formulating climate-resilience and water strategies after experiencing droughts and floods recently.

Economic risks related to the disruption of water networks were also included, as they can affect industries like agriculture, transportation, electricity generation, and public services.

There have been many instances of extreme weather occurring in Europe during recent times, where some regions have even experienced droughts and floods shortly after one another.

It was noted that proper planning and management of water infrastructure would be essential in view of increasing threats from climate change.
