Experts Highlight Cycling as a Solution for Cleaner Air and Sustainable Mobility

The rising air pollution, traffic problems and growing concern about health problems of citizens residing in urban areas of India, cycling is considered as one of the effective solutions that can ensure clean air and sustainable transport systems. Experts and policymakers highlighted it during a national seminar held on the occasion of World Bicycle Day 2026 in New Delhi.

The seminar, titled "Smart & Sustainable Mobility Through Cycling: A Pathway to Cleaner Air and Healthier Cities", was organised today at the India International Centre (IIC) Annexe by SmartBike in association with the India International Centre and the World Cycling Alliance.

During the seminar it was stated by speakers that cycling could be a useful method of reducing dependence on vehicles running on petrol and diesel fuels.

The event was attended by officials from the government, experts on mobility, and delegates from various local and international organisations. As the chief guest of the occasion, K.N. Shrivastava, IAS, Director of India International Centre and ex-Secretary Civil Aviation, was invited to talk about the growing importance of sustainable mobility in Delhi NCR region.

Participants discussed the planned celebration of World Bicycle Day that would be held in Hyderabad and Chandigarh on June 7, 2026. According to the planners, the events are expected to see the congregation of more than 8,000 cyclists and community people in each city.

Speakers emphasised that apart from policy support and infrastructure development, the active participation of people in encouraging cycling will play an important role.

The discussion was summed up with a focus on how cycling can be used as a means of making cities cleaner, healthier and more sustainable.
