Heavy rain and severe storms triggered flash flood warnings across New York City and parts of the US Northeast, causing flooding, power outages and infrastructure damage after a record-breaking heat wave.
Flash flood warnings were issued in New York City, northern New Jersey, and parts of Pennsylvania following heavy rains and thunderstorms that led to flooding and stranded vehicles in the northeastern US.
According to the National Weather Service, there was a risk of life-threatening flooding in several regions due to heavy rains. It is recommended for people living in flooded areas to stop traveling and go to high ground in case floods develop.
Emergency alerts were declared in New York City following the flooding of roads and other areas. The mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, encouraged the residents living in basement apartments to evacuate in case of any flooding in the house.
Flooded roads were observed in northern New Jersey, resulting in several vehicles getting stuck there. Water rescues have been made by emergency teams despite heavy rainfall continuing into the evening.
A roof collapse occurred in a part of the roof at a BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, New Jersey, following the heavy rainfall. Two people were found trapped in the building temporarily; however, they managed to escape. There were no casualties reported.
The storms came after days of intense heat in the Northeast region. Recently, the LaGuardia Airport of New York City registered a temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). The high temperature overnight has increased the possibility of heat sickness.
Health departments of New Jersey are investigating the cause of death of 29 individuals suspected to be heat-related. The individuals in their 30s up to their 80s were discovered in outside locations or in their houses without air conditioning. According to the health department, the causes of death are still under investigation.
The same system of weather brought strong storms, winds, and rains in parts of the Midwest before proceeding to the Northeast region. The storms resulted in the disruption of electricity due to damaged power lines and other infrastructure and left about 450,000 customers without electricity in the US.
The forecast for the weather predicted additional rains in the region, which could increase the possibility of local flooding in saturated regions in the Northeast region. Emergency officials have warned people to avoid traveling on flooded roads.
