Germany has recorded a provisional all-time temperature high of 41.3°C as an intense European heatwave forces event cancellations, raises environmental concerns and prompts fresh weather warnings.
German weather experts have reported provisional readings indicating that the country has recorded the highest-ever temperature, which is 41.3 degrees centigrade in Saarbrücken. The new record will surpass Germany's previous highest temperature record of 41.2 degrees centigrade, which was recorded in July 2019.
According to forecasts by the weather service, the upcoming weekend in Germany is predicted to be extreme in terms of temperature, which could rise to 42 degrees centigrade in certain regions in the country. On the same day, the German weather experts stated that the previous record for June was surpassed by the weather conditions in Germany.
Due to the prevailing hot weather, the organizers of different events have canceled or modified a few activities. For example, play time in the Bad Homburg Open tennis event has been postponed because of the intense heat. Besides, the singles final game has been brought forward to an earlier time. An open-air opera event in Leipzig has been canceled because it posed hazards to the performers.
The effect on rivers has also been observed. The temperature of the waters in the Rhine, Mosel, and Saar continues to increase, leading to a decrease in the levels of oxygen and increasing the likelihood of deaths among the fish. According to environmentalists, such hot weather can lead to additional stresses for aquatic ecosystems.
Outdoor events have been held with additional precautionary measures being taken into consideration. Organizers of the Pride parade in Munich suggested that participants bring water, wear light clothes, and not be exposed to sunlight for a long time during the march.
Germany is not the only country in Europe experiencing abnormal heat this week. It is forecasted that the heat will continue to move east, affecting regions of the Czech Republic and Hungary where the temperature is likely to exceed 40 degrees Celsius. In all the above-mentioned places, the weather situation has led to transport disruptions and an increased burden on health services.
According to climate experts, such heat waves become increasingly common with global warming. Europe is currently experiencing faster rates of warming compared to the global average, therefore making heat waves more likely.
