Government to Buy Moong and Groundnut Crops from Farmers
Government agreed to buy 54,166 metric tonnes of moong (green gram) and 50,750 metric tonnes of groundnut from farmers under its Price Support Scheme.
Centre has approved the procurement of a total quantity of 54,166 MT of Moong under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) in the States of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat for the summer crop season 2025–26. Similarly, the Government has approved the procurement of 50,750 MT of Groundnut under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) in Uttar Pradesh for Summer Crop Season 2025–26. To help farmers get fair amount of money for their crops, the government has taken the decision. The government has also extended the policy for buying tur (arhar) dal to encourage more pulse production in India and reduce dependence on other countries.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved an extension of 15 more days until June 26 for the centre to keep buying red gram (tur dal) in Andhra Pradesh to support farmers there. To help boost pulse production and reduce dependency on others, the government has allowed states to obtain 100% of their total output of tur (arhar), urad, and masur during the 2024–25 procurement season under the (PSS).
In the Union Budget, the government has confirmed that it will continue its (PPP) Pulse Procurement Program for four years. As part of this plan, government will allow central agencies like NAFED and NCCF to purchase 100% of the pulses produced in each state. The main aim is to make India grow enough pulses on its own and it will reduce the dependency on imports.
To help farmers in getting fair prices for their crops, the government is also running an initiative known as the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan, or PM-AASHA. This plan includes different schemes to help farmers when market prices are not stable. One of them is the Price Support Scheme (PSS). It helps farmers when the price of crops like pulses, oilseeds, or copra drops below the government-set Minimum Support Price (MSP) during the main harvest season. During those times, the government buys the crops directly from farmers to ensure they get a fair price.
The main aim of PM-AASHA is to make sure farmers get a fair and guaranteed price for their crops, even if market prices go down. This helps farmers earn a stable income and protects them from losses. With this plan, the government wants to support farmers' livelihoods and make the country’s farming system stronger.
