Centre reviews fuel supply, urges states to ensure smooth LPG distribution and prevent hoarding and misinformation

Govt Calls for Strict Monitoring of Fuel Distribution

The Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas led a meeting with senior officials from States and Union Territories to review the current fuel supply situation across India. The meeting included Additional Chief Secretaries and Principal Secretaries from Food and Civil Supplies departments to discuss coordinated efforts and improve supply mechanisms. Key areas of focus were fuel supply management, LPG distribution, petroleum supply stability, fuel availability in India, and energy security. This reflects the government's ongoing commitment to ensuring steady access to essential fuels.

During the meeting, the Secretary updated the participating States and UTs on the steps the Central Government has taken to improve the supply of essential petroleum products. These efforts support a larger strategy to manage fuel supply, maintain LPG distribution, ensure petroleum supply stability, guarantee fuel availability in India, and enhance energy security amid changing logistical and demand-related issues. The Centre also recognized the cooperative efforts of several States, highlighting the importance of coordinated governance in sustaining supply chains and avoiding disruptions.

Focus on Strengthening LPG Distribution

A key topic during the review was the distribution of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), especially for domestic consumers and essential services. The Secretary stressed the need to prioritize LPG supply to households to keep daily life uninterrupted. States and UTs were encouraged to adopt proactive distribution strategies and work closely with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to ensure smooth supply flows.

Additionally, the Centre urged States to consider targeted distribution of smaller 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders based on local demand. This step is expected to help meet the needs of specific groups, including migrant workers and those facing economic hardships, ensuring fair access to clean cooking fuel.

Vigilance Against Hoarding and Misinformation

The Secretary highlighted the need for careful monitoring to prevent issues like hoarding and fuel diversion. States were instructed to stay alert and take quick action against anyone trying to exploit the situation for personal gain. Authorities were also warned about the dangers of spreading misinformation, which could cause panic among consumers and disrupt regular supply patterns.

In this context, States were encouraged to actively counter false information and ensure that clear details reach the public. Building trust and maintaining transparency were pointed out as vital in avoiding unnecessary concern and ensuring smooth operations within the fuel supply chain.

States Commended for Proactive Measures

Several States, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, received praise for their proactive enforcement actions. These States have conducted raids and implemented strict measures to address irregularities in fuel distribution, ensuring that supplies reach their intended recipients without interruption.

The Secretary appreciated these steps and urged other States to adopt similar strategies to enhance monitoring systems. Timely intervention and decisive action against violators are crucial for maintaining order and efficiency in the supply network.

Clarification on LPG Supply for Migrants and Transport Sector

Responding to concerns about LPG supply for migrant workers, States clarified during the meeting that there is no disruption affecting this group. Supplies remain steady, and adequate measures are in place to fulfill their needs. This clarification aims to ease any worries or rumors about shortages in certain areas or among specific groups.

Regarding LPG use in the transport sector, particularly for auto-rickshaws, the Secretary noted that efforts are ongoing to meet the demand. However, it was recommended that vehicles capable of running on both LPG and petrol should use petrol when necessary to reduce pressure on LPG supplies. This flexible approach is expected to help balance demand across different fuel types.

Continued Coordination for Supply Stability

In closing the meeting, the Secretary expressed gratitude for the cooperation from all States and Union Territories. He stressed the importance of ongoing coordination and close monitoring to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply and build public trust.

The Centre reaffirmed its commitment to helping States manage the fuel distribution network effectively. By focusing on transparency, enforcement, and collaboration, the government aims to keep essential petroleum products easily accessible to everyone, even in the face of ongoing challenges.
